peripherals & security

Peripherals and security products are probably not what you were hoping to use your vacation fund on. However, you'll be truly glad that you never have to think about someone hacking into your network or sending you a virus. Deleting massive amounts of spam while waiting for your files to open will be a thing of the past.  Although these products work behind the scenes, they are some of the most important you buy and keep your business running.

my computer has a virus?

Well, by now most companies have figured out that they need anti-virus software.  What many small business don't know is that the personal edition of the anti-virus software that you can buy in the computer store is neither effective nor consistent for business use.  That's why all major anti-virus software makers have a special corporate version of their software.

Symantec, the maker of Norton Anti-Virus also has a small business product designed for use in companies of any size. It has all the great features of the Norton you know and love, but makes it faster and more efficient to update and maintain for business customers.

your modem isn't a firewall

Most business owners we meet with assure us that they have a firewall.  The truth is that over 90% of small businesses don't have a true hardware firewall.  Chances are that if the equipment came from your telephone or cable company, it isn't a firewall.  And although Windows XP computers have a very basic firewall built-in, we really don't want harmful information coming into your network before it gets blocked out.

WatchGuard, a leading security company has a great line of firewalls starting at only $329 which block out harmful information before it ever hits your network.  Sounds like a smart move to us.

spam's not just in a can anymore

In case you haven't received the persistent e-mails advertising varying prescription drugs or free software, you should know that spam's no longer just in a can.  With the massive amounts of junk mail most people get, it can be a real pain in the neck to actually get to the e-mail you want.

That's why Symantec, the maker of Norton Anti-Virus purchased a technology called Brightmail, a piece of software that gets rid of junk e-mail and works perfectly with their corporate anti-virus software (see above).  Making security simple...what a concept!

as simple as a switch

Do you know the difference between a hub and a switch? Most people don't.  The quick version is that with a hub, everyone in the office is sharing one connection to the network, whereas with a switch, everyone has their own dedicated connection to everyone and everything else.

What the heck do I care? you may be asking.  Would you like it if everyone in the office shared one phone?  It might slow things down a bit, huh?  Often times, for less than $100, you can move your office to a single switch to improve network speed, making everything and everyone work faster.
