The Business Development Specialist role is not another routine sales position with a different title. It’s a role that combines relationship-building, strategic selling, and good old-fashioned people skills. The right candidate for this role will help us execute on our strategic plan to triple the size of our company over the next few years.

What kind of person are we looking for?

  • The Master Strategist– As we already said, this isn’t your average sales job with a fancy title. We’re looking for someone that will help us execute on our strategy – to target a specific group of companies we think would be a great fit, and help us get their attention through whatever methods are effective. We’ll need you to help develop new and creative ways to get in front of the right people.
  • The Opportunist– We need you to turn inches into miles. We need you to be able to sniff out a great potential client from a mile away and turn whatever crack of daylight they might be willing to give us into a closed deal.
  • The Connected Networker– We need your connections. We’ve got a target list of qualified prospects, and we need your help in getting our foot in the door. We’re focused on ways to get a warm introduction, and we’re hoping your connections will help us execute on our plan.
  • The Light Switch– We want you to be able to turn on the charm when you need to. You’ll be the first impression many people have of our company, we want you to be able to turn it on exactly when it’s needed. Whether that be on a call, an in-person meeting, or at a group networking event, we want to make sure you’ll represent our company the right way when the opportunity arises.
  • Just a Little Bit of a Nerd– You don’t need to have a ton of IT experience for this job (although it certainly doesn’t hurt). But you need to like technology, be willing to learn a ton about it, and enjoy helping people make their jobs easier and their companies more productive. After all, that’s what we’re all about.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • 4 Year (Bachelor’s) Degree strongly preferred, preferably with a focus that involves communications or business administration. Equivalent experience is absolutely acceptable.
  • 5 Years minimum experience in sales roles, preferably in a B2B environment selling to a C-level audience. Prior prospecting or outside sales experience is required. This is not the right job for you unless you’ve got a successful track record of strategic selling.
  • Experience working with computer hardware, software, networking equipment, and IT solutions/services is a huge plus and will give you a leg up on the competition. Related industry experience (such as telecom, PBX, VoIP, or office/copier equipment) is also acceptable, and we’ll be happy to train you on the ins and outs of what we do and the technology we use.
  • The right candidate for this job will have a good working knowledge of devices, cloud applications, and some basics about IT services. Not to mention the ability to learn quickly. If you don’t know the difference between your mouse and your iPhone, this isn’t the right position for you.

So what will I be doing every day?

Below is a list of the day-to-day responsibilities – well, it’s is a pretty good start, at least. Given that we’re a small company and this is a new position, we can pretty much guarantee you that you’ll be asked to do things that we haven’t thought of yet.

Job Description / Responsibilities: The Business Development Specialist position is designed to be a full-time, salaried + bonus/commission, overtime exempt position, completed in approximately 40 hours per week. The position will be responsible for the following:

  • Target Client Qualification. We’re not looking for a million new clients. We’re looking for 5-10 per year. Maybe 15 if we really go crazy, ideally adding at a rate of no more than two per month. You’ll be working with our Solutions & Ops teams to flush out the target database we’ve assembled and figure out if there’s an opportunity and if the timing is right for us to build a new relationship.
  • New Client Acquisition. Your job will be to convert qualified prospects into happy new clients. We’ll need you to open the door and get them into our streamlined sales process, so we can show them what we’re made of.
  • Strategic Referral Creation & Development. Our best clients have typically come as referrals from our existing clients. And our existing clients usually rave about us. So we need you to help get them to rave about us to the right people at the right time. We’ve grown organically from 6 to 17 employees over the past 5 years. We need you to work that referral train to help us grow strategically from 17 to a whole lot more over the next 5.
  • Up-selling & Cross-selling. We’re rolling out a slew of new service offerings over the next few months, and we’ll want you working with our Solutions Engineer and Marketing & Solutions Specialist to get these offerings in front of clients and turn them into closed deals.
  • Strategic Partnership Creation & Development. We’re firm believers that having strong partnerships will help strengthen our service offerings and grow our client base. You’ll be responsible for helping to develop those partnerships and work with them to find mutually beneficial opportunities for everyone.
  • Solutions + Ops Collaboration. You’ll be working directly for our CEO who leads our sales & marketing team and you won’t be working alone. We’ve got a team of 5 focused on sales & marketing that’ll help guide and support your efforts along the way.
  • TBD. Yep, that’s right. To Be Determined is officially in your job description. We’re a growing, changing and evolving company that needs more sales and marketing talent. That’s why we’re trying to hire you. It’s very likely that we’ll need more of your magic to spread around in different areas. We need someone that’s on board with our vision and up for a challenge.
